September Live Session: Maternal Lineage: Breaking Patterns
Join us for The Motherline: Breaking Patterns, a one-hour live group session exploring the patterns, beliefs, and ways of relating we inherit from the women who came before us, and the parts of them we may still carry today.
Some things are taught to us directly. Others we absorb without anyone ever saying a word.
We learn by watching how the women around us handle anger, love, conflict, motherhood, their bodies, their needs, their relationships, and their pain. We learn what it means to be a “good” woman. We learn what gets approval, what creates conflict, what needs to be hidden, and what we have to do to belong.
And sometimes, we find ourselves repeating things we consciously swore we would do differently.
Why do I feel guilty when I put myself first?
Why do I take responsibility for everyone's feelings?
Why is it so hard to receive?
Why does someone else's disappointment feel like something I need to fix?
Why do I become the version of myself I promised I wouldn't become?
In this session, we'll explore the motherline through a few different lenses: psychological, relational, somatic, and spiritual.
We'll look at the patterns you've inherited, but also what may have been missing. The emotions that weren't safe to express. The needs that weren't met. The ways the women before you learned to survive, belong, and be loved.
We'll consider how some of these patterns can become part of our inner world, the critical voice, the expectations we place on ourselves, the roles we automatically step into, and the ways our bodies respond before we've even had time to think.
We'll also explore the idea of unconscious loyalty: the ways we can remain connected to our family by continuing patterns that were never consciously chosen.
Sometimes accessing freedom can bring up guilt. Sometimes doing things differently can feel like leaving someone behind.
Part of the work of pattern-breaking is about honouring what these women survived without continuing to carry it.
There may be grief here, too. Grief for what you didn't receive. Grief for what your mother didn't receive. Grief for generations of women who had very few choices.
But there is also choice. What do you want to keep? What are you ready to put down? What do you want your children to inherit from you, not just materially, but emotionally?
And perhaps most importantly: What gets to begin with you?
What to Expect
This is a small, live, interactive video session with guided reflection, conversation, and space to share your own experience if you want to.
You don't need to know your family history or have a clear understanding of your “patterns” before you come. We'll use the hour to slow down, get curious, and notice what comes up.
One of the most meaningful parts of doing this work in community is realizing that you're not the only one.
Someone else may share something you've felt your whole life but never had words for. You may recognize yourself in another woman's story. Something someone says may bring an old pattern, memory, or feeling into focus.
We become mirrors for one another.
And sometimes simply seeing something clearly—perhaps for the first time—is where change begins.
This isn't about blaming your mother or fixing your family history.
It's about understanding what you've inherited, having compassion for where it came from, and beginning to decide what you want to carry forward.
What was passed down to you does not have to be passed down through you.
